Purchased in 2000, the LAS owns 40 acres of land at a dark site in Crawford County, Indiana about one hour from downtown Louisville. We observe there at least once per month at dusk around new moon with public star parties on the Saturday closest to the first quarter moon.

This state-of-the-art facility features a roll-off roof observatory with a 16″ Meade reflector and a 12″ Meade SCT and a warm room. The observatory is equipped for astrophotography. Other facilities include three acres of camping space and observing fields and a multi-purpose building with classroom, kitchen and his and hers restrooms. The observatory may be reserved by members and is open to the public monthly.

Public Star Viewing Nights
Take A Virtual Tour Of The Solar System on the Starship Unbridled Spirit! Our members will also be setting up in the observing field starting at dusk on these nights. You can look through their telescopes at the planets and the moon or bring your own and we will teach you how to use it. 

Our 2011 Star Party dates for Curby are:  January 22, February 19, March 19, April 16, May 21, June 18, July 16, August 20, September 17, October 15, November 19 and December 17. Viewing begins at dusk. We welcome the public to join us for viewing of the  moon, planets, double stars,  nebulae and other wonders of the night sky as LAS members give our guests a look through their scopes.

DIRECTIONS TO THE JAMES G. BAKER CENTER FOR ASTRONOMY

From Louisville take I-64 west to the Leavenworth/Marengo Exit (92). Go North (Right) on State Road 66. Go 3 miles and take a left on Curby Road at the “Curby 1 Mile” sign. Go 1.7 miles on Curby Rd and take the first left past the town of Curby. The LAS property is 2.7 miles on the right. Look for a gravel road to the right coming off of a 90 degree turn in the county road.
