  • Epiphany Catholic Church Youth Center, Anchorage

Our own Terra Clarke will present a talk on

Dust Storms and Sand Storms on Mars

Abstract: This presentation will examine the physical processes of Eolian (wind driven) sedimentation on the planet Mars. Emphasis will be placed on the physics of particulate entrainment, transport, and deposition, in the rarefied Martian atmosphere and operating under the planet's lower gravity. We will examine both the suspension of dust particles as well as saltation and potential surface creep of coarser sand and the effects of these dynamic processes on the creation of both erosional and depositional features in the Martian landscape. Such features include ventifacts, lag gravels and pavements and yardangs created by erosion, and dust sheets, sand sheets, and dune complexes resulting from deposition. The changing seasonal face of Mars resulting from shifting albedo features spurred on by changes in atmospheric circulation will also be discussed.

Non-members are welcome to attend as well as those with questions about using their telescope. Someone will be willing to help you out.

The meeting will be livestreamed on YouTube at this link:
